Story

As the Senior Product Designer from Mirego in collaboration with SidLee, I supported and mentored the design team at Loto-Québec in delivering a native iOS and Android experience. Together, we worked to create a seamless, personalized, and engaging interface that brings both lottery and casino games into one cohesive app.

The app features a personalized home screen that highlights games tailored to the user’s interests. It allows users to purchase lottery tickets online, access the most popular games (slot machines, roulette, blackjack, table games, Instants, and lotteries), and explore themed collections to discover new content. Users can also quickly access their favorite games through search or favorites, check draw results, and scan their lottery tickets using their phone’s camera.

Problem

Designing Loto-Québec’s new mobile app came with a unique set of complexities. We were not just refreshing the interface but helping evolve a well-established product into a more modern, flexible, and engaging platform.

As I collaborated with Loto-Québec’s internal design team, several key questions shaped our problem-solving approach:

  • How to unify the Baraka design system with new patterns?

  • How to update the UX without disrupting users?

  • How to clearly separate casino and lottery games?

  • How to keep consistency across iOS and Android?

These questions helped guide our design decisions, keeping the user experience at the center while aligning with business goals and technical constraints.

Solution

To solve these challenges, we adopted a collaborative and iterative design process alongside the Loto-Québec team. We extended the existing Baraka design system with new components built specifically for mobile gameplay and content variety, ensuring both consistency and flexibility.

Key user flows were redesigned to streamline navigation while maintaining enough familiarity to support long-time users. To clearly distinguish lottery from casino content, we used strategic visual cues such as color, iconography, and layout. I also worked closely with the engineering team throughout the process to ensure quality delivery and smooth implementation.

Finally, we aligned only necessary elements with native iOS and Android guidelines to create a seamless experience across platforms. The result is a unified, user-friendly app that feels both intuitive and fresh.

Rating: 4.7 ★

The app launched successfully with a stable user rating, reflecting a smooth transition for existing users. For the first time, clients could access both Casino and Lottery experiences within a single, unified mobile platform. This made play more convenient, engaging, and accessible for everyone.

Working closely with Lawrence, Loto-Québec’s Sr. Designer, was an absolute delight. I loved seeing her take some of the practices from my app design experience, from thoughtful QA to working through solutions together, and apply them to our design system. It became a really collaborative process where we challenged ideas, solved problems together, and ultimately made the work stronger.
